Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ
1024 PM MST Thu Apr 24 2025
.SYNOPSIS...A dry weather system will bring cooler temperatures and
elevated winds Friday through Sunday. Gusts are from the southwest
up to 35-45 mph each day. Warmer temperatures and lighter winds
return thereafter.
&&
.UPDATE...Nothing to update. Current forecast is in good shape
with overnight forecast remaining clear skies, light winds and
seasonable overnight temperatures.
&&
.PREV DISCUSSION /424 PM MST/...A trough currently located off the
coast of the Pacific Northwest is diving south and will become
closed by Friday. The cyclone reaches central California by
Saturday, then begins moving northeastward. The precipitation and
moisture will follow this northeast track, and Arizona looks to be
cool and dry.
The primary impact from this trough will be elevated winds. Gusty
conditions will begin on Friday as the pressure gradient tightens
ahead of the cyclone. Wind will be out of the southwest gusting up
to 35-40 mph on Friday, then 35-45 mph on Saturday and Sunday. The
combination of these winds and low humidity will bring areas of Near-
Critical fire weather, especially in lower elevations north/east of
the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains. Winds are borderline or
below thresholds for Wind Advisory criteria on Friday, and there
remains uncertainty on fire danger ratings this weekend. No
headlines for wind or fire weather hazards at this time, will be
reevaluated in subsequent days.
Winds look to settle down starting Monday. General troughing will
remain in the wake of the cut off low on Tuesday, then a series of
shortwaves troughs will pass through Arizona throughout the week.
There remains high uncertainty in the strength/location of these
shortwaves, and precipitation chances are small at this time.
&&
.AVIATION...Friday 25/06Z through Saturday 26/06Z...VFR conditions,
no precipitation expected. Winds light and variable or terrain
driven tonight, increasing to S-SW 15-20kts, gusts 30-35kts
between 16Z-20Z.
OUTLOOK...Saturday 26/06Z through Monday 28/06Z...VFR conditions,
no precipitation expected. Winds SW 15-25kts, gusts 35-40kts from
18Z-03Z every day, 10-15kts overnight.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Friday and Saturday...Expect dry conditions and
mild temperatures. Areas of near critical fire weather conditions
are possible both afternoons, but mainly in the lower elevations
north of the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains. Winds southwest at 15
to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph both days.
Sunday through Tuesday...Gusty southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with
gusts 40 mph on Sunday, decreasing and turning westerly Monday, then
light and variable for Tuesday. Areas of near critical fire weather
conditions are possible Sunday, mainly in the lower elevations north
of the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains. Mild temperatures will
continue.
